Why outsourcing electronics manufacturing is a risky business

Think about it. Printed circuit boards run our modern electronic world: every component in the computer you are using now, the cell phone in your pocket, your mp3 player. Printed circuit boards also control our cars, our airliners, our industry—and our military.

Now consider that a growing majority of the printed circuit boards we depend on are manufactured in China, a country destined to be the United States’ chief economic and military rival in the 21st century.

Those who understand the electronic manufacturing and engineering process know how easy it could be to design a board that could perform hidden functions, electronic Trojan Horses, waiting for a trigger to cause disruption in the technology that drives our modern lives. It is truly a matter of national security.
